Hello,
I'm Grandma Cookie and I just got my chickens a few weeks ago. I picked up 3 pullets - Barred Rock, Black Copper Maran, and am Easter Egger. These ladies are wonderful, and I'm enjoying them very much. I purchased a coop (8' X 10' shed) made by an Amish man that is very sturdy and beautiful. I certainly hope it will give my ladies all the security they need. I have ordered 3 chicks (a Lavender Orpington, Columbian Wyandotte, and a Buff Brahma). I also have two more pullets (Golden Buffs X 2) coming in November. This will complete my flock for now. I love these birds and spend as much time I can with them. I am reading and researching everyday to educate myself about chickens and all the things necessary for chickens to have a happy, healthy life.

BTW, I decided to name these ladies old-fashioned ladies names which I enjoyed very much.
Ava - Barred Rock
Beatrice - Easter Egger
Clara - Black Copper Maran
Dinah - Columbian Wyandotte
Eliza - Lavender Orpington
Flora - Buff Brahma
Gemma - Golden Buff #1
Hazel - Golden Buff #2

I'm not sure if a rooster is in my future, but I'm considering it. Currently, my coop setup has a pen attached, but I'd ultimately like to free range these ladies and I've believe they'll be safer with a rooster guarding over them.

Pork Pie,
Thank you for the information. I appreciate your time and consideration. I certainly hope to have plenty of resources for any questions I may have learning about these chickens. About 7 years ago I raised chicks (till 9 weeks old) and then I had to move to take care of my elderly parents and was not able to take my babies with me. I was devastated! My neighbor took them and they are living happy lives in Georgia. I've moved to Ohio and know the girls will face different living circumstances (snow, and winter cold temperatures), so I made sure to choose breeds that were cold hardy.
Thanks again for the information.

Wait until next year.
Spend this time observing your flock and learning chicken behavior.
When you do go to get a rooster, join some local Facebook poultry groups and post that you're looking for a rooster, show me what you've got! You will soon be flooded with plenty of options. Look for a bird that is near one year old minimum that has been raised by a broody hen in a multi-generational flock. These boys, hands down, tend to be the best roosters. They've learned manners from the older hens that put them in their place, they've had time to gain experience with breeding so they're not sloppy and they will have shown by that age if they are human aggressive. You can find some absolutely beautiful and amazing flock leaders that way. Have fun with your new flock!

Thank you for the great information. I appreciate your reply. I have read about the different breeds and am considering a Brahma rooster, so far. I have small grandchildren and don't want a mean rooster that may chase them, or worse. I don't want to deal with a mean or anxious rooster on a daily basis either.
