Thank you for the great information. I appreciate your reply. I have read about the different breeds and am considering a Brahma rooster, so far. I have small grandchildren and don't want a mean rooster that may chase them, or worse. I don't want to deal with a mean or anxious rooster on a daily basis either.
Hi Cookie, welcome to BYC!
I agree, brahmas are so sweet. I also recommend langshans.
I imagine that at least one of your pullets will go broody next year, considering the breeds that you have purchased. If you want a rooster or two, you could purchase fertile eggs and let your hens raise some for you. It will save you worries about introducing a male that may carry disease or pests. Brahmas shouldn't be too hard to rehome, if you get too many males. People love the feathered feet and the gentle personalities.
Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks for the information. I didn't even think about getting fertilized eggs (didn't know you could even do that, lol). My Easter Egger will sit on her eggs often. I make sure I gather them by mid morning so we don't encourage her and we don't have any issues.
Is there any way to control when they lay? My BCM lays in the afternoon sometimes, I thought all chicken lay by noon at the latest?
Thanks,

Mine lay all day long. There isn't any way, as far as I know, to get them to lay at a specific time. Of course, mine line up for the 2 or 3 favorite nests, even though we have 15 nests. LOL. It is great when the grandchildren gather eggs because they are mostly in two nests.

BTW, Cookie, this is my Cookie. She is blue ee x buff brahma mix. A big girl with a sweet personality. I'm planning to keep her and one of her brothers. I've already rehomed one of the cockrels.

:welcome :frow There is a lot of good info here on BYC. I hatch out a few hundred chicks each year of which around half are males. I keep the best as my future breeders and sell the rest which helps to offset the costs of the feed. I show my birds at poultry shows. Enjoy your birds. Maybe a male will be in your future. Good luck and have fun...

The birds will lay whenever. If you know someone who has a male maybe they will have some fertile eggs. You may have a bird that will sit but I always have a plan B, my incubator. Again, good luck and have fun...
