Cooking Young roosters

Yes, I agree it’s good to have them in the freezer, but my poor arthritic hands just about give out when plucking, but I love that crispy grilled skin! :drool
I hear you. I just do 2 a day and even with the plucker my hands cramp... but my back is the real issue. Plucker was a late retirement gift to myself :wee
Figured I wasn't traveling or any other entertainment to waste money on. Poultry TV is my entertainment :love

Being with my chickens and ducks is my happy place too. I don’t work (early retirement) so I don’t have a lot of money to spend, but that’s okay. I choose it. I hate to ask my DH to buy much more than the feed. I just finally figured it up last week that my birds are eating 10 lbs of feed each day. I never dreamed it was that much. I think I need to start butchering some old hens for soup. :hit

I ferment the feed. https://tikktok.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/fermented-feed-faq/
150 lbs a week feeds 42 hens 4 Roosters and those chicks,
14 turkey hens 4 toms. 25 poults

I did that for a very short while early on (fewer chickens), but I somehow let a big batch get away from me. I also have a tremendous ant problem. If a feed bowl isn’t hanging, including my dog and cat bowls, the feed is swarmed with ants. I even have to sprinkle Garden and Poultry Dust underneath the hanging feeders so the chickens can eat in peace. I bought one of those Grandpa’s Feeders in the beginning only to find out it was useless for me. I think it took all of two hours for me to find that out.

I think, though, I’ll revisit the idea of FF. I can make some hanging feeders for that too I suppose.

Thanks for the link.

I feed 2x a day. Morning feed is a bit more than they can finish at one time. They forage in-between. Helps to keep the tiny and larger varmints from helping themselves. Chipmunks still run in and grab
