Replace water often, to make sure it's not hot. Cold watermelon, frozen gallons of water, fan in hen house, tried a mister they didn't like it. Water down the dirt in the shade night before, they dig later to lay in the cool dried mud.
If it can be frozen, I freeze it! Currently freezing some oatmeal for the girls. I like to give them some form of treat everyday, and they sure do love their oatmeal! Today's treat was 1/4 of a frozen watermelon. They pick that clean in no time!
Took a large sweater container and filled it with 3" of cold water, Put a frozen milk gallon of wter in it and they would not go near it. Put some BOSS into the watr and that dissapeared, but no splish-splash-I'm-takin'-a-bath activity. I tried to sprinkle then with water and they are hydrophobic. They could have cared less for the frozen watermelon but I have another one, a half with the insides scooped out like dbounds10 reccomends. Hope that works for them. If not, it's on to cantalope!

When I first gave my chooks watermelon (not frozen, just cool) I sprinkled rolled oats all over it, since they would sell their little souls for oats. While they were enthusiastically pecking up the oats, they were also getting mouthfuls of watermelon, and they quickly realized it was tasty! Now if they see anything remotely resembling watermelon they get all excited.
Knowing chooks fondness for anything red - I took strawberries, chopped them into bit-ish sized pieces, froze them in some water in an ice cube tray.
Served in their 'treats' container (clay pot bottom) with a handful of BOSS on it - yummy! I'm not sure how they figured out how to get the strawberries out, but they did and loved it!
Frozen corn (big ol' bag) was a big hit yesterday.
Not sure what to do for tomorrow. Perhaps chilled mealworms?
i have lots of time.... i take all the powder from their feed (that they seem to ignore) and i have 2 old pear trees that i cant eat a quarter of....puree and powder feed, scoop in egg cartons then freeze, thrifty and they love it!
