coon attach hen has puncture wounds

Our girls were rudely awaken last night by a big coon. I thought one was dead bloody not moving unti she heard the gun cock. She walked out of the coop and sort of wondered around until I picked her up and put her back in coop. She sort of laid there until I put the other two girls back then she hopped up again. She has two puncture wounds that I can see on top of head and face. This morning she is alive but her comb is very pale. Any suggestion?I gave them a treat this morning but she said on the roost and talked to me.

I had a girl attacked by either a raccoon or possum recently. She was in shock for a few days. I had to separate her from the flock to give her time to heal properly. Keep a close eye on her and if she's lethargic or not eating/drinking, you should get her into a separate area to recuperate.

Agnella is right. They go into shock. Mine wouldn't get on the roost for several days and stopped laying for a couple of weeks, if I remember correctly. Are you doing anything about her puncture wounds? These BYC people could advise you on that, I'm sure.

Should I treat the wounds? She does not like me messing with her. Would I cause her more trauma trying to medicate? I have had the girls threethree years and this is my first wound. Second coon.....but first one did not time to do anything. We are going to pour a concreat base this weekend. Sorry for the errors writing on phone!

Can you post pictures of her wound? I agree with every one else about isolating her in a box or crate. She needs to be in a dark and quiet place with food and water. Keep us posted.

Yes, isolate her...make her comfortable in a darker environment..makes her rest better..mine would not eat for a few days..I finally got her to eat..oatmeal, cut up grapes, leftover mashed potatoes..anything to make her strong, you know..
I just had three hens killed by a freakin' coon..so no survivors on my end...but I have had several hens and my rooster attacked my a neighbor's dogs..they all came back..one even lost all her flesh around her neck..all that was left after the attack was her trachea and spine..she is alive and kicking..I used bluekote and neosporin, and a human wound spray....several times a day..and had her isolated for weeks as I wanted her feathers to come back in..they did..
My rooster lost most of his back..fleash, and all..he is doing very well too..

Make sure the first aide stuff you use doesn't have "CAINE" in it....it's deadly for chickens.

For puncture wounds, flush with water/betadine mixture. Then pack with neosporin. Keep her isolated from the others til she heals. Provide her with scrambled egg, buttermilk mixed in her feed to make a mash. Provide her with fresh drinking water. Time will heal.
