After doing a lot of research here in the annuals of BYC, I figured that my #1 problem raising hens if going to be coons.
I do not even have my chicks yet but I thought now is the time to start the thinning out process. I basically have 2 months before my chicks would even be considered ready to move into their coop, so why not I thought.

Yesterday I recieved the Duke coon trap and I put it out next to the creek and bam already caught one of those masked varmits. There is NO telling how many of them lurk out here and this is going to be a job for sure. But, that duke coon trap...the dog proof trap works like a charm!

I'll toss my comments/worries in here because I was going to post about this anyway.

My neighbor's dog treed a raccoon last night. In 10 years this is the first I've heard of one being around. I'm certain the noise our chickens are making attracted them. I am so incredibly nervous because my husband insists chicken wire is fine. Maybe I'll buy a roll of the hard mesh stuff and put it up myself. Their coop has four wooden walls and a plywood floor with chicken wire underneath.

I just don't want to be one of those folks who loses all of their chickens and says "I wish I would have known they could have gotten through that!" I too feel very responsible for their lives. If I want eggs and meat from them how can I put them at risk?

I'm sorry to take over your thread but I just didn't want to add a new one on this topic.
