Was out weeding the garden and the chickens & ducks were turned out in the big yard...DD 11 was throwing chunks of cheese and watching the game of "chicken got it tag" when she freakes out and screams for me to come in the yard quick there is a coon!!! This is around 1:00 ish in the afternoon. So I come running and she is shooing the chickens away from the coon. It was just a baby but it would have grown up and caused trouble so I called dh to come home and shoot it. He was just down the road ( I kept it busy by throwing it cheese and it would just sit there and eat.....And he comes home and says awww it is just a baby....Proceeds to catch it and put it in the cat cage

. Then dd says she sees another one in the tree.(which is right at our back door.) So eventually dh gets the gun and shoots the one out of the tree and then shoots the one in the cat cage so all is well.

No chickens harmed and no one hurt...Thank goodness...

Coons are the number one cause of poultry loss here in Mo.Nobody hunts or traps them like they use too. There are just way too many of them.I just lost three good hens to one.I had a surprise waiting for him last night,he won't be around tonight.Take care.

Racoons, Racoons, Racoons............They are everywhere. They run along my fence line to go hunting by the duck pond. A cat follows it everywhere. They are about twenty or so feet from my coop and don't even bother to mess with it, guess the ducks/garbage cans are easier prey. I like um!

Raccoons every where This must have a good breeding season for them I have seen alot of them on the road in the morning on my way to work
Just rember they need to eat also BUT NOT FROM My FLOCK OR ANYONE ELESES All we can do is protect our girls
Have not seen the hawks that were here last year moved on to better feeding Too much work to get to my girls

Well I better get started building run for my new babys TURKEYS

Good luck and enjoy our featherd children

SORRY a close friend gave me this name years ago

So far this year I have trapped (and 'disposed of') three of the chicken-eatin monsters. Lost one hen to them and have declared WAR!!! Four years ago, before I had chickens, they used to get into my sweet corn and almost cleaned it out so I started trapping. I got 21 of the devils the next summer. I've been trapping ever since. These things are a real pest and rabies is prevalent in this area.

racoon - I had a friend when I was in high school we called "cooney"
He had coon dogs and coon hunted.

okiron - no he dumped it out of the crate before he shot it. ( thank goodness lol)

My dd11 was watching the baby coon in the cat cage and we fed it a chink of cheese just so she could see how they eat - unfortunately they are really cut when young but I explained to her it is a choice
1. let them go and they kill our chickens
2. kill the coons before they can kill our chickens

She chose #2 the coons had to go... our chickens and ducks are our babies and as she said they come first.

The funny part of all of this is dh was putting up electric fence around the sweet corn to protect it from the coons and deer LMAO
