We finally got our interim coop to a point where the three girls can go outside without constant supervision (they are in their coop at night). This is our “year one” solution - my fiancée is getting elbow surgery and his arm won’t hold up for building the more permanent solution until next year.
We dug the fence down a foot and there is a hardware cloth perimeter you can’t see (under the dirt). Bought some heavy duty avian netting and used 8 foot chained link fence posts to give us some head room. Attached hardware cloth to the bottom 24” of the fence, and bought an electric fence for the perimeter but haven’t put it up yet. I also need to finish the net by the gate.
So far so good. We have some pallets that we’re going to put in there for separation, since we have five chicks inside who will be added in another month or so.
Any other suggestions? I want to make little wire above ground “tunnels”— I want to put veggie boxes in the space next to the coop and have heard that chickens can be good pest control around gardens.
