Coop and chicks Re-located to the "chicken garden" (PICS)

The dogs would love one of these girls to fly the coop.

A couple weeks ago during a "field trip" to the garden the Pointer sucked one of the hens through the fence. Hens were about 4 weeks old and much smaller when this happened. luckily it being bird dog = soft mouth. I rescued the chicken from it's mouth expecting the worst.....to my surprise there was no damage. The bird didnt have a scratch and was perfectly fine!

I have a net that will go over the top of the run, right now I let them out of their coop with my supervision only!

Love the dog, Is it a pointer? Looks like a great place for the chickens to hang around in.

Yes, French Pointer (Braque Francais)

Very cool birds eye view pic. I really like that feeder you've got. I might try to copy that

Very nice! About the tomatoes . . . I've heard that the leaves/vines are poisonous to livestock - not sure about chickens but I've read on here that most folks pick off any leaves before feeding the tomatoes to their birds.

Lovely set up. But since you mentioned this is a sunny spot, here's something to think about. Come summer, be alert for signs your chickens may be getting overheated in the sun. They can get a bit of shade under the coop, but depending on the angle of the sun at different times of day, maybe not enough. Just something to be aware of, since chickens are actually far more susceptible to getting overheated than they are to cold in winter.

Looking good! I see three chickens in there. I start the betting that the only thing left in that run by July 19th are the chickens, dirt and half a suspended tomato plant in each planter. :p

Yes, I made the feeder. I actually made two but haven't installed the second one yet. Not sure if i need it depending on how long this one last in between re-fills.

I framed up a rectangle using 2x3's and put chicken wire across the top and grew organic grass through it, so the chickens can only eat what grows through the wire and not kill the plant. Problem is I didn't intend on actually placing the coop with-in the run. Once I decided to do that I had to ditch the grass grow. which was a shame beause it was growing crazy fast! I'm rethinking how to set up the same thing with the limitied space I have.

Originally I wanted to place the coop on the outside of the run and give them access t the run via a side door that can be seen on my coop build page. After careful reconsideration I figured it best to put the coop inside the run secured away from the DOGS!

The feeder extends up the the second floor via a hole I cut out in the floor. I open the door to the second story, remove the lid and refill as neccessary...seems to be working out good!

The cylinder is black pvc pipe in the largest diameter that home depot carries. They sell yellow lids that fit down perfectly flush with the PVC for 29 cents.
The bowl is a pet food dish I found a local pet feed store and fits perfectly. The bowl is stainless so it should last a while. I secured the two together using L brackets and screws.
