Coop and poop

Actually you can have a 'POOP FREE NESTING BOX.' If you start out with a clean nesting box to be used for a setting hen, it should remain poop free. Most setting hens don't poop where they set.

tHANKS FOR all the cccccgood advice. I am just glad to hear iit is normal. The roosts are higher and they poop there and under roosts also. Last night I checked where they are, and some slept on their roosts and some in the nexting boxes.

I don't think any of my flock are actually pooping in the nest boxes. But, they do so much scratching around in the coop that the poop invariably ends up in the nests. So, we get some poopy eggs. No complaints thus far.

I have no problem with poopy eggs, I just want them to start laying. I have made some adjustments, I hadded a hard boiled egg weekly, more veggies, some meat, not chicken, and cut back some of the tree branmches for more light.

I think my hens sleep in their nesting boxes because they are warmer! Come summer, I'll keep them out of the boxes at night,

I have the same problem. They sleep and poop in the nest boxes, and then lay eggs in the poop in the morning. Other than cleaning the nest boxes every morning, and modifying my already built coop, how can I get them to not lay eggs in poop?

I think your on the right track. The amount of sunlight in a day is increasing and I would think that they should lay soon. I think daylight may be the problem??? I've read somewhere in the BYC forum where some people add cayenne pepper to their feed to get them to start laying, maybe you could try that? I'll see if I can find a thread...
