Had heard of that concept, do you remember what climate they lived in and if it worked? A lot of ideas you see here are shown just built, but not followed up for success/problems/failures. Might work if you turn your run into a greenhouse to help with heat gain.Leave a space in the middle for a black rubber bowl of water and add a few ping pong balls that will break up light surface ice as they blow with the breeze.

I'd advise getting power to the coop....or getting several waterers to swap out.
I really like horizontal nipple waterers, can put them in any sized container.
But they can take time to train to from an open waterer.
Saugerties is about 10 miles north of Kingston, so not too far.
