My Cottage
Well my girls have been in their new coop for a little over a year now. While I mostly love it, I have discovered that I made a design flaw. In my enthusiasm to use all 4 of the vintage windows I had saved from an old cabin that was demolished, I designed the front of the coop with two windows placed vertically right above the external nest boxes.

So this meant that the slope of the nest box roof is very slight and yes you guessed it. This has become a chicken hang out and there is of course, poop all over. Also it gets down in the space between the coop and the roof so every time I lift the lid to get eggs, a shower of dry poo falls into the nest box. This is all my fault. So modifications need to be made ASAP. I would like to plan out what to do so I can present it to my husband.

I plan to cut out the front panel of the nest boxes inside the trim. I would then like to build some small doors and attach them so they could just open out like cupboard doors. In fact, I might even have some old cupboard doors that could just be cut down for this. Then I will remove the handles on the lids and cover that with either metal roofing or that corregated fiberglass stuff so that they slide off when they jump up there.

Does this sound feasible? Why oh why didn't I think of this when it was in the design stages? I could just smack myself. If you have any better ideas, please let me know.

I would be cutting out the white part on each nest box, There is now trim on either side of the pop door so I could attach new doors right to the trim on each side. As you can see, I should have put one window horizontally up high instead of the two vertically and made much steeper nest box roofs.

I remember when you built your coop! A whole year already?

So cutting out the white part on the nesting boxes, would the new doors open down? Or up? How do you picture them opening? (Just trying to get the picture in my head.)

Just hinged on the sides and open out like cupboard doors. Or I could hinge them on the bottom to open down, or just replace the tops with metal roofing???? I am so mad at myself for not catching this before it was built. Otherwise, I still love it.

It really does look good and your redesign plan sounds good. You can try making an arch like structure over the nest box roof to discourage them from hanging out. They will eventually get conditioned to think they can't get up there then you can remove it.

That's a good idea. I did go out and lay a piece of corregated fiberglass on top of the lids just to see if that deters them. It would be far easier to just make new lids that they don't sit on than to cut out the front panels because we could just remove the wooden top and attach whatever onto the frame that is already there. Security isn't a huge issue because the coop is inside an enclosed run. So far the only attempt we have had at a break in is a ground squirrel running up the side on the hardware cloth as he was trying to get away from my dog. LOL!!!!

You know what? I just had another thought. I have some old louvered doors that could be cut down lengthwise to fit on the top of the nest boxes. The would be a bit too wide which means I could leave them partially folded. I wonder if that would deter them or if they would look at it as a perch???

I am getting tired of these chickens always outsmarting me!

I'd hang a scraper on the side of the coop and scrape before opening the nest box lid.

This is what I am doing currently but it is gross! And the poop keeps falling down behind the lid and then into the nest boxes. Keeping them off in the first place would be a better solution overall I think.
