So the extent of my building skills stops at build stands for fish tanks...cut me a break on the plans I can't draw lol I'm trying to figure out how to do the roof...shingles or metal( leaning towards metal) and how wide to make the spaces where the chickens will sit. Right now we have six chicks and we would like to get six more. It will be a 40sq ft coop. Any help you can give would be amazing. I'm doing the whole build by myself (trying to complete it before my brother realizes it) I will also have a 20lx10w fenced in area for them. Our ducks will be fenced in next to them with a plan Jane box until I can build another for them all of the same size. Thanks for your help!!

Great job on doing this yourself. Shingle roof should be cheaper and quieter in the rain.

First off download some free graph paper and then draw out each side.

Your 3D picture has way too much going on and that's why it's hard to figure out. Draw each side to scale one side at a time.

Here are some plans of my coop I built last spring (and I'm not a builder or draftsman either!)

This should get you started.

My only problem with shingles is that I am putting two access doors on the roof to sweep out the old bedding and the shingles would prevent it from opening right.

Are you sweeping them out, or scooping them out? I don't see a spot to sweep them out to.

Our chicks are coming in two weeks! Dumb question, should I put pine wood chips in the run area or just leave it the grass? We are going to free range when they are old enough, and keep them in the pen when ever we leave. We have 15 ornamental chicks coming. I am sure there are things we will forget to do before they get here, we only have a little if the chicken wire left to put on!
