Coop Building Reference Table....(suggestion area only)

Ideas for you nesting boxes to get your eggs from the outside you could get or find old cupboards and make dividers.

Waterer if you want to make automatic water you can go the guts to toliet with the float system and I five gallon bucket if you have it inside the coop it would work great.

Just Idea's
Hope this will help.

On Site Survey

1. Topo (slope) This alwasys affects foundation design
2. Drainage away from coop & run
3. Shade & sunshine
4. Predominant wind directions
5. Neighbors (our closest is about a 1/2 mile away but I know a lot of people are true backyarders.

Ray,

Wind direction, related to temps or for air movement in coop? Just wanted to make sure I don't misunderstand your reference to wind.

Thanks for the list, I'll add them to the outline (which will be a rough draft for review by all BYC before we finalize it)

Jeff, I'd think both would be considered. We want to ventilate for various reasons, heat being one of 'em. Wish we had the input of a mechanical engineer here to help size ventilation openings vs. coop volume. I'll see if I can pick a couple of brains of some mechanical contracts if there's no one in BYC that could help with it.

Good idea, LA. Seems like a lot of 'em out there. We have a Kabota.

Seriously, though, I do like your idea. They sure aren't built quite the same.

LA~Poulet :

Maybe a c. for tractors?

LA~Poulet,

Yes, I was considering including tractors but I decided to put them in "Phase II" of the project. I promise to get to them as soon as we finish Phase I of this project. There's a couple other items that will be included in Phase II, so I wanted to split the project load into two parts.

Ray,

Let me know what you find out, if you run into a wall finding the answers, maybe I can tap into my resources (we have an engineer at the plant site) and see if he can get me into contact with someone that can answer the questions on ventilation requirements.

That's an easy one!

For the coop (indoor portion): 3-4 sq. feet per chicken is ideal, 2 is minimum.
For the run (outdoor space): 4-5 sq. feet per chicken is recommended.
Roosting space: about 1 linear foot per bird
Nesting Boxes: One nesting box for every 2-4 hens

The sticky's a great idea!

I've seen over and over, here on BYC, that the run should be at least 10 sf per standard size chicken and 1/2 that for banties or the chickens may start feather picking and other undesirable habits. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the guideline I've been going by for quite awhile and I got the info here.

Mary Ann,

Would the 10 sf be referring to chickens that have no run or free-range time? I could understand that amount of square footage if your chickens don't get out of the coop at all.
