coop cleaning questions

We have 17 laying barred rock hens. They do well laying in their straw lined nesting boxes but also poop in them snd throw staw as ll over the floor if the coop. Is this normal? Can I do anything about it? Also how often shouldwe be clcleaning out the coop floor? It's just the ground not an actual floor.

Some folks use something called the deep litter method and don't have to clean the coop very often. Here is a link to how it works.

Chickens usually don't poop in their nest boxes once they realize what the boxes are for. One reason they do is when their nest boxes are higher than their roosts - chickens roost at the highest point they - even if it's the nest boxes.
Sand is what some folks use in the coop - seems to keep things cleaner.

Thank you. The roosts are definately lower than the boxes. We wil change that.
