So I've read about how you shouldn't use cedar shavings with chickens.

I found a fantastic cedar-made chicken coop that someone is selling.

Is this okay or should I steer clear of it as well?

TIA!

I'd think it would be okay, especially if the wood has had a time to rest and there is good ventilation. The surface of the wood has probably lost a lot of the cedrol (and cedrene, chemicals in the cedar) and would be okay "with adequate ventilation." If it is a closed up space, with no or little ventilation, then I'd say no. The real problem with cedar chips is the huge surface area that releases the cedrol to the air. And continually using cedar chips brings in a new source of cedrol every time the chips are replaced/replenished. Just make sure there is good ventilation and don't sand the interior walls of the coop, which would expose and release new cedrol into the air. Of note, cedrol is not poisonous, but kills the birds by blocking their airways. Since chickens are prone to respiratory problems cedrol can do a lot of harm. This also means that their eggs and meat would be okay to eat and it won't really poison the birds, assuming the concentration is low enough to not harm them.

That said, pine is a whole lot cheaper and there are no concerns with the fumes.

HTH!
