Hi everyone! If anyone who read my other thread wondered about that 7x4 foot window in my new coop, well... that came to me as a freebie that used to be a tabletop. It's tempered and a half an inch thick, and wow is it heavy! But it saved me $$$ on lumber and gives the chickens (and us) a beautiful view of the yard. The wife wants to make some heavy curtains for the winter, but I'm not sure if they'd just tear them up. MY thought was to just staple visqueen on the OUTside of the window and give it a double layer air pocket that way. Any ideas/suggeations there?
While designing and building the new coop, I've had the pleasure and added benefits of raising 6, (though now 7) new chicks and observing their behaviors. This last week was the "switchover" time for the rest of the flock as I brought them in from the old coop at roosting time so they could adapt easier, then closed up the old coop. The last few nights ALL of them have come in and settled right in to the spots they've chosen. That in itself was a task, to get enough perches for everyone, up high, with jumpers for easy access. The 7 chicks picked out the first perch and still go to it and the rest seem to avoid it if the little ones (8 weeks) are on it. Our rooster has his "throne", of course, and his favorite 2 hens are right at his side. After spending so much time with them in the morning during breakfast and in the evenings tweaking the coop, I can go right down the line and tell you pecking order, and who's who! It's amazing to us how much we are still learning, even after ten or so years of having them! I'll have a bit more time now to read here and possibly offer my input to help others. Thanks for this forum!
