Hello! We've almost got our coop finished and I wanted to decorate the inside of it! I am wondering what I can do to make it more 'homey' for my girls? Do chickens like bird toys? I understand that they tend to destroy things, so I don't want to give them anything that could potentially hurt them.

I have heard of nest box curtains. You put them over the front of the nest box and other than looking pretty they say that it can discourage egg eating, encourage hens getting broody but can also discourage multiple hens from coping another broody hen. It also makes the nest box darker and more private and secluded. On the other hand some chickens won't dare enter the nest boxes and freak out for the curtains. Hope this helps!

My hubby and I made chicken swings for our group. I also hang the extra cucumbers from the garden from the top frame of the outdoor run with twine and they have cucumber tetherball like the Chicken Chick says to do. I poke a hole in the top center of the peeled cucumber with a chop stick and then run the twine through the hole and knot it off. During this heat I also make up frozen fruit rings, frozen scrambled eggs and other frozen goodies. My flock also likes it when I put the mister setting on my hose and then they can go through it at their leisure. Fresh fruit and veggies have been the best form of entertainment for them and me. I too also have the nest box curtains along with matching window curtains. I buy fabric on clearance and then that way when the others get dirty, I just pitch and staple new ones up. You can also take the feed bags once you are done with them, cut the front out and staple to the inside of the coop for everyones viewing pleasure.

I never decorated my coops as they weren't that great to begin with so I figured why waste time and money. However, we are starting a new one in the next week or two and I am going to go all out. It will be in our front yard and we will pass it each time we go in and out so I want it to look lovely. We are doing our yard in an English cottage/enchanted garden style and the coop will reflect that.

It will be painted a color called cottage white, both inside and out, which is the trim color on our house. I will be putting glass knobs on all the doors and cast iron brackets in the door corners. I am using vintage windows as well and I am making nest boxes out of a dining room hutch and will have curtains over them as I do now, cause my girls like them. I generally use an old sheet, shower curtain, table cloth or extra fabric I have laying around to make them and then I just staple them up. I usually find stuff at the thrift store that works well and is cheap. I will look for a shabby chic style of sheet for the new coop. When they get dirty, I take them down and either wash them or toss them depending on what kind of shape they are in. If you don't sew, you can use that ironing tape to make the seams.

Right now we have a pool for dust bathing, 2 stumps, a large tire and a picnic table with two benches as well as 2 chairs for the girls to play on. The new run will be smaller and covered so it will have one bench and two tree branch perches and one or two chairs as well as a dust bathing area. I also have a bowl for treats and they have small feeders that hang on the walls for oyster shell and so forth. Have fun decorating.
