coop design questions

Do you have any kind of a sketch layout that shows your coop and run?
My run door is pretty close to the pop door, makes a smaller space to clear the snow away for access to both.

@Chad Oftedal has a great 8x8 layout.
ok did a quick sketch hope it gives an idea. With wood that I bought think sides with windows will be 4' high and not sure on middle of the coop depends on slope of the roof that we do. (my husband isn't sure if he wants a slope roof or the peak roof, sorry not sure what it is called. I want it peak but he is building it so guess whatever is easier for him.) I was planning on having water and food outside in the roof covered part of the run should I have it inside as well?????

hope this sketch gives an idea and you can make it out. the X part isn't part of the coop or Run. Squares are 1'x1'

That's a great sketch!
I think the coop door being inside the covered run is fine.
So how do you get into the run?

was thinking of putting the door either right at the uncovered (hardware cloth covered) part of the run on nesting box side, or right where the 2 runs meet but in the covered part. Or all the way at the end of the run that isn't shown on that drawing.

If I put it across from where it says 8x8 in the roof covered run part but on nesting box side then I shouldn't have to worry too much about snow blocking the door in the winter....

How high up from the roost should the window be if it is partially over the roost?

That would be key.
Make sure your run door opens out....just in case a ton of snow piles up there.

I have some that are pretty close to the roosts, but are covered with cardboard to block drafts from loosey windows.

My roost is about 2 feet away from the wall that has a window at the top. I lowered the roost for the winter so that the cross draft from the opposite window would be higher above the birds' heads.

The people door and the pop door are on the same wall, and take up that whole 4' side of my coop. It works out really well. In the summer, I leave the people door open for more ventilation in the coop.

I'll let the northerners advise you about most of the things you're asking about, but I will say that I love having the food and water outside in a covered run.

When I had a covered run I had the food and water right next to my access door so I could attend to it easily and monitor it.

Good idea! Glad I asked as I didn't even think about leaving that door open for more ventilation in the summer!
