im going to be getting my first chicks in about 2 weeks. i've never had chicks before, and i need some advice on chicken coops. thanks:) (FYI, im getting 6 chicks. 2 wyandottes, 2 buff orpington, and 2 americaunas)

  1. how big should the coop be?
  2. how many laying nest will i need? im not sure if each of the six hens will need one or if they can share.

thanks!

try searching "how big should my coop be?" in the search section. This question has many answers and had been discussed in detail. Your questions will be answered many times over. Good Luck with your chickens and welcome to the site!

Heres what i would do. Build a coop like this:

Then you can add a run. Like this:

That would be PLENTY of space for 6 ish chickens. I currently have 4 banties in there but its over 70 sq ft. large enough for up to 6-8 laarger birds. CHECK OUT MY PAGE FOR MORE INFO!!!!

There is a picture of the coop that I built right under my name. I believe the indoor space is not as important as the outdoor space for your chickens. They need room to naturally scratch and search for fresh food, grass and bugs to be happy and healthy. Make sure your chicks have a spot to roost to get off from the ground so they don't get a wet bottom and are out of their own feces.

I have 4 nests for my 5 hens and they ALL use the same nest to lay in. the recommendation is 1 nest for every 2 chickens.

I hope this helps.
