coop,deville

I love those sliding windows!!! My coop has 2x4 windows already built, and for winter I need to cover them somehow, your idea still lets in light on cold windy/rainy days. I will have to show this to DH! Im copying your pvc/cable idea too. thanks for posting

Ty and copy away! After reading on here about about maintenance and general upkeep i tried to build it so i could do most everything from the outside and with the greatest of ease (call me lazy)

.I will be able to get the eggs from the outside, open and close the door to let them in the run from the front, feed and water and even clean out the coop from the front.I set the coop high enough so i could back my lawnmower trailer up to the front door and rake the shavings into it.I did not show it in the pics but i have vinyl flooring down under the shavings. Now if it would just stop raining i could get started on the run!I got the holes dug for the posts but its been to wet to set any.

Great job!!! Love the coop !!! One thing I have noticed though....your roosts are 2x4's - at least that's what it looks like to me - it would probably be better to rotate them to have the wide side facing up for roosting. It is eaier for the chickens to sit on and if you are in a climate where it gets cold in winter the chickens can protect their toes from frostbite. Their feathers cover their feet while roosting and stay warm.....Nice that th roost is elevated, you can have more run space (covered and sheltered from sun and rain) if you enclose the sides and extend the run. Post pictures when the run is finished....Always nice to see great set ups

Good to know!I will change the direction of my roots.I cut them 1 1/2x2 1/2 and used hanging brackets so i could remove them if ever need be.I will unscrew the brackets and turn them sideways and then slide the roosts back in.I rounded the corners on the brackets before i screwed them in place.and just to be safe i will run a screw in the roost through the bracket so they dont slide out.Good eye and thanks for the info!

Is 2 1/2 wide enough or should i go with a stud-3 1/2 width?

I went with the standard size 2x4...or whatever it ends up between 3.5 and 4....I'd say best to be wider or at least 3 inches for the standard breeds. When they flatten out their feet most will take up about 3 - 3.5 in....If you have smaller breed chicken 2.5 should be OK. Your goal is a roost wide enough to protect toes from frostbite ( and hopefully avoid bumblefoot to an extent)

Very nice. My only suggestion would be to use screws and washers to install the hardware cloth. It looked like it was stapled over the windows, if yes that's not going to be strong enough to deter a determined predator
