What I really need to know is how high does my separator need to be.

Layers should probably have a ceiling.
Meat birds not so much.

First thought is that chicken wire is not predator proof.
Check out my coop page, I built a coop inside a shed with 2x2 framing and hardware cloth.

well it depends, I have 2 great pyranese at my land so I have never lost a free range chicken to a predator so chicken wire works for my situation

I'd got full height...when my hens started laying (10 years ago), my PBR would climb up into the rafters of the coop that I had secured the bottom of with hardware cloth, everything I had read said they wouldn't get up in them and definitely wouldn't lay eggs with a breeze blowing up from under them! But, every day....she'd pick a spot, climb or fly up and I watched more than a few eggs come out of her (it's fascinating really)!

If you can't go full height, build the meat birds a "box" so they don't get mixed into your layers.
