coop fire

Must have been a pretty big coop to hold 70 birds.
Did the entire coop burn to the ground?
Was it attached to the house or just close to it?
Devastating.
There were 3 coops side by side and the middle one caught fire which apparently caught the others afire.
So sorry for your lose. That’s one thing I learned here in BYC, not to ever use a heat lamp because of the danger of a fire. I read so many times here chickens Don’t need heat during the winter. I was shock to see how well they do without heat.
True.
People have been raising chickens in quite cold climates for hundreds/thousands of years without thinking about heat lamps. If you track where breeds originated and when, they come from all over New England, Ohio, Canada, UK, Russia, Norway, etc..
There are much safer, less costly and more effective ways to heat a coop if one simply ignores advice and must do so than a heat lamp.

If anyone wants to try a heat lamp check out Premier 1 they have an awesome heat lamp. I bought one about 6 yrs ago and to me one of the safest or the safest there is. I have never used it in my coops though only when I brooded inside my home.
Are you talking about the Premier 1 heat plate or an actual heat lamp?

What makes it safer?

Heat lamps are a pretty inefficient means of heating space. They use a tremendous amount of electricity and only heat what they are aimed at.

I like that heat lamp from Premier too. I use them for chicks, both in my garage and in the coop, very well secured. Twine, the electric cord, and most importantly, a chain with a snap, all attached to a fixed point overhead. The chain is the most important thing, and the fixed attachment.
Fire scares me a lot, and won't take chances here.
