Hi,
We are getting a coop for our chickens, but it has a wire bottom. What are your experiences with this? Should we put a piece of plywood down and use deep mulching method inside the coop?

We plan to use construction sand for the outside run, and maybe put in a dust bath.

Also, straw or pine shavings in the laying boxes?

Thanks....

Wire floors are bad for almost all animals and can cause foot problems, so I would cover it with something.

Any reason why you want to do deep litter or bedding inside the coop but sand out in the run? I find it easier to use same material in both so I can "clean" the coop by just raking the litter into the run.

I use aspen shavings in the nest box since it's something I had around for other pets.
