coop floor

do you leave your coop floor dirt or put something over it? if dirt, do you put hay over it? if you have ply or linolieum do you put hay? thanks! im putting the finishing touches on my coop!

We put vinyl floor down over plywood. I love it! I can really give it a good clean and it wipes right up. I have some hay over the floor. Try not to get that really slippery vinyl if possible. I went to a local flooring store asking for a leftover piece (cheap) for my chicken coop and the owner GAVE me the remnant for free and it's a very high quality floor! Score!

hello.
we have linoleom (probably wrong spelling) on the floor then i lay wood chips ontop of that. i dont lay alot. i clean the coop out just about every day. not emptying the poop just moving it around so they arent walking on yuck! i hope it will be easier to clean out this way when i need to do my moping of the floor. ill do that once in a while, maybe once a month, for a good cleaning. i also clean where they roost too!

My coop is raised above the run. The floor is 1/2" hardware cloth, and we have a remnant piece of vinyl over the wire, covered with pine shavings and DE. When we need to clean the coop, we just lift up the vinyl and dump everything in the compost heap (OK, it DOES take 2 people). Couldn't be easier, and chickens seem very comfortable with the arrangement.

I use dirt or, rather I should say, the coops were built on the ground. I use hay some times and other times I use wood chips and even grass clippings. When it gets nasty, I rake it up and put the whole mess in the compost bin....works great.

In the walk-in area of my hen house I have used builder's sand. Roosts and nesting boxes are over wire with "poop pit" underneath those areas. I have tried wood chips and sawdust in the walk-in part of their house but find sand to be the best for me. When chix poop on the sand it is so easy to scoop up with a small rake and trashcan turned on its side......the poop goes in the container and the excess sand stays on the floor. It also has cut down on the amount of dust that is in the house. Leslie

I have five Brahmas (11 weeks old) on a dirt floor about 8x4 feet. They also have a 4x4 wood-floor coop.

I put shavings down in the coop, and nothing on the dirt. So far I have been disappointed they aren't pooping enough to keep my compost fully satisfied. Come on girls, poop!

I assume I may need to put more shavings or straw down, but haven't gotten there yet. The whole area is roofed, so it doesn't get muddy.

I have a friend who has a 30x10 foot coop with a dirt floor, unroofed. In this rainy spring/summer, he's had a hell of a time keeping it from getting smelly. Lots of straw.

I have dirt on my floor, since coop is on the ground. I deep litter and use leaves and hay. Clean it out once every 6 moths or longer~ I don't have many predators so no need for flooring here in suburbia FL. I like it, my chickens like it but next coop we may put floor( deciding) i say NO, hubby says YES.
