We are getting ready to build our coop.. a 7x8' coop with a long run off the back side. We were not planning on putting in a floor though...just securing wire around the bottom of the inside of the coop and burying it 6 inches down into the ground. We live in a warmer climate. Why do most of the ones I see here have floors...and even some with linoliuem (sp???) flooring?

TIA!

to make cleaning easier

I have laminate tile floor on the bottom of our wooden coop to keep it alittle cleaner. Even though we have shavings over it when you go to clean everything out you can very easily wipe it down and sanitize it. Plus just in case they have some runny poo the tile doesn't let it soak into the wood. Its just my own personal preference, especially after having a coop with a wooden floor. And it looks great! lol

I am still leaning towards just having a dirt floor in the coop with shavings that could easily be raked out....unless I am still missing something. Trying to justify the cost - verses the advantage.

Thanks aqain!!

the only problem I see about having a dirt floor is that when it rains...the floor will be wet. And if you add shavings on top of that you just going to have a big wet mess that wouldn't smell too good. Our old coop got soaked during hurricane Ike and trust me, the wet shavings stink! You would probably be better off in the long run with a raised floor.

What about using a rubber mat..like the ones you put in horse stalls. Do you think that might work? It is something that I already have.

My coop has a dirt floor. I use the deep litter method and it works great. I only have to rake it out about 2 times a year or less. I placed the coop on a little bit higher ground than that surrounding it so it doesn't get wet in there. It's very hot here so my coop only has 3 walls, great to keep it cool and lots of ventilation.

I'm working on a 8' x 14' coop right now for my 26 BR's. I am doing the dirt floor too. Rhere's not a problem with it being wet becuse there's nothing but sand here in Michigan.

Ditto. I have a dirt floor and until it rain or snowed and the soil around got saturated with moisture it was fine. Then I lifted my plastic I had over the floor and found where my moldy smell was coming from. Under the mat was a mat of mold. All the shavings touching the dirt were moldy underneath my deep mulch of pine chips too. When my budget and health allow I will replace it with a solid floor. I had even dug it up and put 1/4 inch wire underneath because of rats digging in. I wish now I had the wooden floor. Also it the dust from the chickens dusting themselves in our red clay. Yikes its everywhere. If you live in a very sandy , well drained area it will work. Otherwise I would go with the wood first. jmho.
