COOP FLOORING

I have heard of using linoleum for the floor of the coop to help with clean-up. Can vinyl carpet runners work also?

Only if you can overlap them and make sure that there are no seams for water, spilled feed and poo to collect in. The nice thing about linoleum is that you can install it in one piece. No seams to worry about.

You can often buy scrap vinyl flooring that works better than the runners - glue it down and even if there are seamsthey are flat and it works great. Seams are places where dirt collects, moisture penetrates through to the floor, and they make clean up more difficult.

Im going to try to put down a piece that is removable, so I can take it out of the coop to clean it.

WE tried using vinyl squares for ease of installation but they dont stick very well.

For an elevated coop you should have a wire bottom cage. If you want to keep the ground under it clean you should have a steel catch basin built in just below the wire. I have a photo of one example on my profile.

Depends on where you are...in the NE in an elevated coop you put in a wire bottom and you have frozen chickens. That type of flooring only works in temperate regions of the country. I know alot of people like to use wire but, I don't like animals of any kind on wire. It just isn't an option for me.

We are in TN and I think open bottom would be to cold here also, we tried a rat wire bottom in a small breeding cage for silkies and bantams, and I don't like it.
