I have a cement floor coop and use deep litter method. I use pine shavings, mulch and wood chips from trees ground up in a chipper. My coop smells clean, earthy and woodsie. I will never use sand again.

IMHO deep litter is the best. Try it, you will like it.....

I decided on a linoleum/waterproof flooring and covered with 10 cubic feet of wood shavings. I also had a bit of leftover hay from nesting boxes that I put down and they seem to love it. Many of you have mentioned the DLM and I had never heard of it but it sounds great.

My chickens are about 3 months old...4 are crowing. How can I tell for sure if the others are hens or roosters??

If you can post pictures someone can identify the hens for you, what breed are they?

I will post pictures.
Also with 31 chickens could I keep 2 roosters or would you guys advise against it! I don't want to hatch eggs just like the roosters

Black Maran
Does anyone know if they are hens or roosters? They are about 3 1/2 months old. Thanks

I have a concrete floor in the coop, and because one section is uneven and harder to clean rubber stall mats are on top of the concrete. Then deep litter with shavings, and some hay that falls out of the nest boxes. Works great! I apply permethrin powder under the bedding when the coop gets shoveled out, maybe three times annually. I am having a hard time navigating BYC...but gotta say I love this site and it is a wealth of information.
That being said...I may be asking this ? In the wrong thread. So I am a novice and have 31 chickens. I wanted a rooster or two bc they are pretty but don't plan on hatching chicks. I am sure I have 4 roosters atleast and was hoping to keep one barred rock and one black Maran too. Two of them are very aggressive! Barred rock has attacked 2 of my hens and my black Maran charged my husband today. I am considering an all girl flock!
I just moved them into coop but had all of them since they were one day old! I am attached and hate to let any of them go:(
City girl turned country! We have other livestock but this is my project and I am at a dead end.
Ideas???
Could their behavior be bc of move to coop and how long do I wait??? I am isolating the stinkers!

I cull for human aggression, no excuses allowed. Nasty cockrels taste great! Rooster(s) are a great addition to the flock; eye candy, sounding alarm for the hens, part of normal flock dynamics. 'Teenage" cockrels in a group of same aged pullets can be very randy before the girls are ready, so drama will occur. In a flock of mixed age and older birds, the youngsters get squelched, a good thing. There shouldn't be actual injuries, however. I also cull for bad behavior to the hens. If you have a nice cockrel or two, keep them and see how they grow up. Otherwise, plan on trying for nice boys next year. Mary
