Okay! Mom and I finally have a cop for our little guys and a run for them. We're just waiting for them to come so we can put it up.

But we have a question!

It says that we're supposed to put litter down there on the floor. Now, we're guessing that's not cat litter or trash. So, what exactly are we supposed to use?

You can use wood shavings (but NOT cedar). Some people also like sand, and/or hay/straw.

I used to use wood shavings, but have mostly been using hay lately. I also use 'care fresh' bedding for their nesting boxes.

We use pine bedding but for the first couple of days we put paper towels on top of the pine bedding so the chicks wouldn't get confused on which was their food and which was their bedding. After a few days, we just didn't lay paper towels down and they did fine. In our coop we have the pine bedding and hay.

Lipkis, Pine shavings are purchased at the farm stores. They are sold in large plastic bags, that are referred to as bales. One goes a long way. Place several inches on the coop floor and replace when your nose says so.

We use wood shavings. Easier to clean up and breaks down quicker for compost in the garden.
We did try straw/hay and it was brutal to remove in the spring when we mucked out the coop.

We've been using corn cob--its safe for the chickens and acts like kitty litter without the dust. Is it okay for us to use that?
