Coop From TSC

Seems like torture to live one's life in a box that small. If possible I would recommend just opening the door on the run so they can free-range outside
Oh trust me I would love to. However we live in town by a busy road. A confined “tortured” chicken is better than a dead one aye?

Depends. I personally would rather live free and have something bite my head off at age 30, rather than live to 60 imprisoned. Quality matters more than quantity in my opinion
I can assure you my chickens aren’t tortured. They are very happy and healthy. I let them out to “free range” multiple times a day. Our end goal is to live in a home where they can free range all day but that isn’t our reality right now.

I’d like to see the set up too. I also have a pre fab (very frowned upon here) With modifications I make it work. I believe mine is a bit bigger and I have 6 chickens but they’re happy.
Same. I have 4 standard size hens and a coop similar to that. I just popped the coop in a large run (25’ x 13’) when they can’t free range and they’re happy as can be with the actual coop itself.
I am getting a bigger one anyways cuz I want more chickens (who doesn’t?), but idk my chickens seem happy for now 🤷‍♀️
They just sleep and lay eggs in it and occasionally just go in to lay down or roost. I felt so weird and like i was neglecting my chickens for having a pre-fabricated coop but quickly realized that my chickens are happy with the modifications I made. It’s not about the look of the coop or where you got it, but if your hens are happy and safe, that’s all that matters :)
Not everyone can afford thousand dollar sheds or coops!
That being said, it is really important to give your chickens space— so make sure that they can fit with a little extra room for good measure and a good run for them. Just listen to the hens! Besides, this coop has lasted me so many severe storms and terrible winds and all kinds of stuff. The only issue is heating in the winter— I’m still figuring that out.

I’m in the same boat. You are a wonderful chicken owner to have such compassion for them. For now, just relax and enjoy them. :)

I think all the advice for the roosting bars and roof have been good. I did see that you would like to get a bigger coop eventually though. When that time comes I would check out Facebook marketplace. I have seen pretty large coops for unbelievably cheap. There are also tons of people giving away free wood (mostly pallets but lots of other stuff as well) so you could build a coop for very little as well if that is what you would rather do.

I think we are going to use the frame from the one we have now and build off of that! We have a few factories around here that put pallets out so we will probably go snag some!
Thank you 😊
