Coop ideas?

We may get a court order to move the coop to the other end of the yard, in which case it would be easier to build a new one so...

We have an area that has a 6 ft privacy fence on 2 sides and a house wall on one 10 ft apart, so I would just need to put a floor, roof, and front, right?

I plan to maintain a flock of 24, a mix of ducks and chickens, so if I make it 10 x 6 with a 1500 sq run it should be good right?

I live in South FL so the only time they ever need to spend the day inside is during a hurricane, and they would be in my garage so that I could feed them.

A couple cautions you should check into.

First, it is very very common for zoning/bylaws to restrict you from putting structures OR livestock that close to a property line. Find out.

Also, you will need to look at how that fence is built. Its posts etc may *or may not* be strong and stable enough to safely serve as half your coop walls; may need beefing up at least, or it may turn out simpler to just build a separate coop inside the fence.

I would point out that if you are in S FL you might be best off (if you are even *allowed* to build right against the fence there) to build a separate freestanding coop with the roof overhang going out to the fence and those two actual *walls* being all-mesh. It would keep out the rain while giving better ventilation/cooling. Since you would not be making a solid wall, your only expense or labor would be putting in a coupla posts, a coupla pieces of wood connecting them, and the wire mesh.

The judge said she will either dismiss the case (neighbor suing because of noise from the hens) or order us to move the chickens to the other side, but the neighbors would have to pay half the cost of a new coop!

So I can get something really great!
