Hey all. I need some coop ideas. I got one of those 10x10x7 chain link dog kennels and plenty of chicken wire, enough 7' to go all the way around with some to spare for the top as well as enough 3' to go around the bottom perimeter. right now i have 3 adult chickens, 5 that are a month and a half and 10 month old chicks. the adults will probably keep living and their magnolia tree but the others need a safer place to stay. all sorts of predators this week...

anywho, i have this old tobacco barn out in the yard rotting away i thought maybe i could work with if anybody thinks it would make a good coop? the roof on the back side is pretty much gone and there is a vent window up top on the left but all of this is pretty much covered up with virginia creeper. heres some pics.

in another old delapidated barn i found this and i thought it might make a nice nesting box? its part of an old pea sheller, methinks.

any ideas?

aside from the tin having blown off the back side its in good shape structurally. looks weathered on the outside but the boards on the inside i could sell for good money to housebuilders.

I dunno beefy, how much would it take ($$ and timewise) to replace the back roof and any of its supporting structure that has gone, AND predatorproof the whole thing so there are no possum size holes and no rotted board ends that a raccoon could scratch its way in through. I am slightly dubious but of course there's no way to really tell from a photo.

If you could run electric wire around it, that would help.

What are the dimensions on the pea sheller piece?

That roll of rusty fence wire would make a better roof to your dog-kennel run than just chickenwire would... although unless the mesh size of the rusty fence wire is less than 4x4, you'd still want chickenwire over top of it.

Cheers,

Pat
