Coop inside or outside run?

my coop is outside the run with a big enough door to walk into the coop. They do not RUN out the door but if left open a little they will nudge it open if i have not closed it behind me.
I am going to put a screen door closer on it to solve my problem. They do the same thing with the door to the run "if i go slowly he will not notice me escaping"

My coop(12x4x9) is inside my garage and my run is outside(22x5x5). I have a steel door keeping them safe from night predators. During the winter my husband covers the coop in plastic and they have the heated coop and run all winter long. I free range for a few hours a day. I need to supervise the free ranging since I see hawks daily! Yesterday they were only out 45 minutes before a pair of hawks spotted them circling the sky, so I let them out before they went to bed.

We made our run big enough, so they had plenty of room if I'm not able to let them out. Right now we have 8, I'm getting rid of one(she's never laid an egg) and adding 3 more. We'll have 10 total in our coop. I'd love to have more, but then it will get a little cramped in there.

I wish my coop was 1 foot taller, so I wouldn't have to crouch down. I clean the run out daily. It's filled with sand, the coop has pine.

Good luck building your coop. It took us a whole year to finish it due to making several changes! Like adding an access door and a steel roof to the run.

Here's my run

We just planted 4 pine and one weeping willow tree for extra shading.

Well, hubby is set on putting the coop inside the run.

He wants to avoid any accidents with the chickens getting out. We do have a lot of dogs and we have to be careful with them.

I built my coop so that it is part of the run. The coop is joined into the run fencing at the front. In this way, I can approach three sides of the coop to clean, feed the chickens, collect eggs, tend to the water without entering the run. The underside of the coop is fenced as well. The chickens can get under the coop from the run for shade.

When the chickens are in the run, I can close the pop door and work with the coop open without the chickens getting loose.

Hope this helps.

Chris

This is exactly how mine is set up and so far so good:) I honestly woudlnt mind it either way though since I do like to spend time in the run daily with the chickens anyhow. But I do love my coop and my set up .

That makes sense...think about getting a separate pair of shoes for going into the run...depending on how many are in the flock, it can get pretty gooy. Good luck and keep us updated.

I am currentlt building a modified version fo the purina coop and once I get it all completed I am going to extend my run out from the front of the coop only. So therefore the coop I guess will be outside the run so that I can access it better. The coop/run I temporarily made I can access of from outside the run and when I open the door none of mine seem to want to run out and they are almost 8 weeks old.

Mine also dont try to get out . They are 9 weeks old and have been in there coop and run for 3 weeks now they are closed in the coop at night and in the run all day and also allowed some supervised free range time daily. When I or my husband or even our kids enter the run the chickens flock toward us at the door but as we walk in toward the coop they follow us even if we do leave the run door open. I have even cleaned and did the food and water with the chickens in the coop and the main back doors open and they dont try to get out at least not yet they havent But I also dont mind if they did get out they dont go far and are easily walk back into the run or easy to pick up and put back in.
This is our set up

I have my coop inside our large run. It is a chain link dog run that is 19ft x 12ft so we didn't have anyway of attaching a coop without building a massive coop. They don't use the coop much so I don't have to clean it very often. I only have to rake the grass in the run once a week for poos :) Hope this helps some!!!
