Hi friends. I'd like to ask about insulating your coop or not. We live in upstate NY and it gets VERY cold and snowy here. My husband wants to insulate the entire coop. I was thinking as long as there is a heat lamp they would be ok. What are everyone's thoughts on this topic?

I live in upstate NY. My coop is not insulated and I don't supplement heat. My coop is very well ventilated and dry. My birds do just fine. I wouldn't insulate. I'd spend my money making the run as large and predator proof as possible instead.

So the big hole in the front will be a window that we can leave open in the summer and close in the winter. They we were going to vent around the whole top.

When you put the roof on, I would shoot for a 1 foot overhang all the way around. You would then have the opportunity to leave the soffits open for constant ventilation and secure them with 1/2" hardware cloth.
I would also hinge the window on the top so it can be left open even if it's pouring rain.
