coop insulation

Oh yes, you for sure want it in the ceiling or all your heat will go right out the top since heat rises. We have very thick insulation in all walls and the ceiling and now I wished I would have put it in the floors as well. That way I would not have to put anything around the bottom of the hen house every winter. Good luck with your hen house. We just got done with a double hen house where there is hardware cloth in the middle to separate each bunch. I have D'uccles on one side and orps on the other. You can see pics of it on my website if your interested. You will have to scroll down for the pics.

The folks here will give you lots of good ideas. I took them all in before I did my coop.

I insulated with the rigid foam sheets, covered it with vinyl flooring for the walls. Put reflex (foil covered bubble wrap on the ceiling.

I use a heated water bowl, but no supplemental heat.

I sized just right for 4 hens.

I live in a windy and this winter a couple of nasty cold snaps, read subzero for days.

There were several days the ladies stayed in all day, but I was out there cleaning it so it got a pretty supplemental air exchange.

I have had no frost bite and 2 have laid all winter.

My advice to you is pick and choose the ideas that sound right to you and given by folks in similar geographic areas. You will be mostly correct and everyone has to do some kind of retrofit after they get going. Hopefully your retrofit will be an easy one.

Make sure the insulation is seperated for the chickens, or they'll eat it

Thank you all for the excellent ideas and opinions.

I have decided to use standard fiberglass batts in the ceiling and walls, and pay close attentiion to the vapor barrier on the inside, and tyvek the exterior. .

I am sure I will be posting more questions as I progress.

Thanx again,

David
