chalet girl
Chirping
I've only had my girls for a couple of months but have learned a lot from this place and just from keeping chickens in general.
One thing I've discovered is that the coop I purchased was not large enough or designed well enough.
Both roosts are in a poor position. One too close to a wall and one too high up. The coop is small and prevents them flapping their wings to get up to the higher roost so I've moved one roost down and the three of them roost on that.
Also the only ventilation is a window right next to the lower roost so that means the cold winter air would be right on them. I've covered it with perspex (something similar)
HONESTLY!!! The coop was advertised for 4 to 5 chickens. I've got 3 in there and wouldn't dream of putting another two in!
So...first time chicken keepers take these things into account when setting things up for your flock.
Sorry for the long post but:
I'm now looking at converting a children's playhouse and want to find a wooden one used. Wooden ones seem to be hard to find (used) so was wondering if the plastic ones would do and if they can be made to look nice with some paint. I'm concerned about plastic since I think they would be too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
Experienced chicken keepers....any thoughts?!?!
This is the coop from the back

Here is my latest picture of the run area. They have a thatched roof and flower boxes
