I know, I know-- I've read all the reviews and this is NOT the ideal route to go and they won't last long BUT, it's my only choice. I bought 4 chicks on a whim for my kids and my husband wants nothing to do with it-- and I can't build. SO I'm buying... I've researched and like these 2 (decent reviews considering) but don't know-- are they big enough for 4 chicks? Maybe 6 eventually? I have acreage and can let them free range eventually if that helps lessen the size needed.

Any help is great! Thanks guys!!

They both look like decent coops in my opinion, but I wouldn't put more than 4 birds in either one of those. I am in the process of building a coop myself. My coop is 5' x 4' with a 4' x 8' run, and I'm already starting to worry that it's not big enough for my for birds.

I'm sorry to hear that you hubby isn't will to help. Building your own design is far cheaper and is only limited to your imagination.

Anyone can build :) But if you're going to go with a prefab coop, look for cedar (like urban coop company). Most everything else is junk and flimsy that I have seen or heard about. Maybe see if you can find a shed on Craigslist and modify. Or, if you're really in a bind, one of these might last longer if you can keep it under a covered run.

Have fun!

I agree with Rwood5093. These prefab coop/pens are easy enough to assemble, but my experience is they are a total waste of money and don't hold up. They are made from thin...I mean VERY thin pine. Often the predrilled holes are often in the wrong places and on the house I bought the nest box hinge actually ripped the wood. It didn't last but a year and it was inside my garage. The construction is usually less than adequate to keep out wind or even shelter cold. If you're willing to spend $600 or so on a coop, you may find something made from lumber and much more substantial. If you check the internet for cedar chicken coop kits you will find there is quite a bit available and at reasonable prices. Here's one as example -

If you can assemble a prefab coop, you are more than able to build one. It's not that hard. Most hardware/lumber stores will even cut the wood to the right dimensions for you. A simple, 4 foot by 4 foot box will suffice. Look through the Coops section. There are a ton of ideas, and many even include detailed plans.

Wow they are expensive!! Do you have a lumber yard that sells sheds?? For $600 you could buy a small shed, perches and nesting boxes are easy to make ....

Just an idea... I do like the first coop though, it looks like a smart design
