how much heat can a chicken stand? right now i have 8 six week olds in the coop until i can get them a run built. the high to day was 87. when i got home it felt a lot hotter in the coop. i bought a fan am going to place it in there for tomorrow. there are two small windows and two small vents, there is not much cross wind. hopefully, i will have the run built on sunday

More ventilation is needed... I have 30 of the same age in an 8x8x5' coop and they do well w/ the same temp today. Make sure they get plenty of water when it gets hotter to help them stay cool. Birds respire a great deal more than people and moisture is higher in the coop. Without a lot of cross breeze (above the birds heads on the roost, preferably) they will have an environment to breed disease and bacteria, grow mold and mildew, etc... More vents would help and ASAP!

i am stuck right now on being able to build a temporary pen, dh is out of town and i am leaving in the am. do you think the fan will help.

what i will do in the morning is put some hardwire over the pop door opening. staple it to the inside and then my MIL when she comes to check the animals can just close off the pop door at night. that way there will more ventilation for them if it gets hot again friday and saturday.

Yes, try to knock together a temporary run even if it is just small -- but also you really REALLY REALLY need to cut A WHOLE LOT more ventilation into your coop. If it is too hot in the beginning of April, just THINK what it will be like in July and August. Very seriously, you need to saw some great whackin' holes in the sides of the thing, and cover with hardwarecloth of course.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
