what size is right for nesting boxes

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might get more opinions if you post your poll in the Coop & Run Design or Chicken Behaviors and Egg Laying forums... it will depend on what size hens you have to some extent, for standards I like 14", for bantams usually go with 10"or12" if they are separate.
 
also you do not need separate nesting boxes for every hen. They tend to want to use the same "favorite," box and will line up for their turn to lay. If it becomes urgent they will just barge in and lay an egg on top of the current resident. One nest box for every 3 hens is about right
