Coop on my porch?

Hey all! When we first got our chicks, ordered a 15x8 shed for a coop for them. Well, for whatever reason, it still hasn't come yet, after about 5-6 weeks. We are starting to wonder if will even show up.

Ok, we have a 12x24' screened porch that I was thinking about turning and 8x12' space into a coop until we can figure out another solution. Has anyone done this before? If so, what are the pros and cons about it?

I just don't know what else to do, and don't have $1000's to build a separate coop for them at the moment. I do have a large shed, but the where my equipment for my landscaping business is, along with the gas for them.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Predator protection, the usually window screen won't cut it.
Stinky...will you be able to clean it after they move out?

I'll take some pictures of it after awhile. I have 3 large dogs the stay on the porch as well, so predators won't be a problem.
We'll have to clean it more often, but the brooders are in here too, so we're used to constant cleaning.
Where the coop would be, I have a 22x12 attached dog run with it that I will have to cover, but that's about it.

Might be better to cover the run and slap together a 'coop' in there, rather than the porch.

Possibly, but we have 22 chicks now, so don't really have the space for them, nor any supplies for the coop. We were thinking of it just being temporary until we can find another option, or lumber prices come down.

Maybe you could cobble something together as a temporary coop out of pallets and tarps?

If the porch ends up as the best temporary option, a heavy duty tarp on the floor under the bedding now and a fresh coat of paint after might be a good idea.

I was thinking about a pallet coop but haven't figured out how to make it predator safe yet. Eventually, we plan on getting an electric fence for it, but money is tight now.

I wouldn't have the 10 foot per bird then. BTW, I am getting that dome that I posted about in another post. The say it has been shipped, so the wife and I are discussing about moving the (porch) coop to the other side, and using the as the run for them, that way I won't have to make another dog pen for my pups.

Not sure if it's helpful, but when we were waiting for our coop to be finished, we pitched our bug tent in the yard and let our little pullets play in there during the day. It doesn't have a floor, and they were pretty protected in there. We brought them in at night.
