Coop Ordinances in Your Town

I am interested in knowing the coop ordinance rules in your town, especially those in Massachusetts. My town's current rules state that coops and encampments are to be 10ft from property lines and 300ft from any dwelling. The 300ft rule seems pretty absurd seeing as how I'm not sure of anyone in this town that can actually abide by that, yet many own chickens.

I am looking to change this rule to something more reasonable and was trying to find what other towns rules are. And if anyone has any tips on how I can go about getting it changed it would be much appreciated!

We recently got chicks and as soon as we were done with the coop our neighbor said something to us. We assumed the 300ft rule was a typo since there are people in this town who we know don't have their coops 300ft from dwellings. Upon calling the town they said it is in fact 300ft and when brought up other residences they said "well we don't know of them".

Hi, I would try asking in your Massachusetts thread and see if you can find anyone near you.

To just get samples of other village/cities ordinances regarding chickens, I'd comb this forum you're in as you'd find some. Or, could just google another city somewhere to get theirs. I'd think if you had three samples that discuss distances coops need to be from other residents, that should be sufficient.

Also, read post #4 from @ChickenCanoe in this thread. Very helpful!

Here's an article that could be helpful too.

Good luck!
