Has anyone made a coop out of a barrel? I am looking to make a tractor pen as a quarantine area for new additions or as a hospital pen for booboos, and was eyeballing a pickle barrel at my boyfriends work. They are about 4 feet tall and two feet wide with a screw-on top. They're made out of PVC type material. Im thinking I could lay it on its side, place a pop door in the side on the opposite side of the screw top and a nesting box nearest the screw top. Place a couple of vents in it and voila... chickenbarrel. Has anyone done it? If not, can you think of a reason why? Not permanent housing, just one chicken at a time, and temporary with a run attached.

In Hawaii, the roos each had their own barrel and were tied to it by a leash. The barrel was upright - like a 50 gallon metal barrel - with a roost on top, and a door at ground level with food/water and roost inside. With the leash, the roo could walk around the barrel, or roost on top, or go inside. We'd drive by fields of these.

I put a barrel in the roo pen so they can get out of the rain and wind. They sleep in it as it is full of shavings. It used to be a dog house and has a hole in the middle of one end. The roos hate it because they can't get on top of it very well but it does hold about 12 juvenile roos inside.
