I have female (sexed at hatch and purchased from Metzer farms) ducks that are 4.5 months old and another set that’s about a month younger. I also have a Pekin drake who was raised among chickens as a lone duck after his brood mates all died about 2 days after I got them (unsexed). I am confident that i saw a drake feather a few weeks ago and he has a very raspy voice, not like the girls. I looked back at my order and the ducks were hatched mid May, so I know for sure they are not yet 5 months old.
The last 2 days there was an egg in the coop. Each morning.
Either one or more of the girls are laying very young, or the 5 month old Pekin i have is not really a drake.
The females’ breeds are Ancona (2), layer 300 hybrid (2), saxony (2), magpie (1), Cayuga (2), and Runners (2).
I’m not complaining but was unprepared for eggs as i didn't think they would lay until at least 5-6 months old.
Has anyone else had an early layer? Given the breeds, which one is most likely to be the one laying?

Wow, i was surprised as everything i had read and what people had told me is that 5-6 months is usually early, not to expect eggs until like 6-8 months. Guess you can’t believe everything people tell you haha.
Im curious about the breeds you have that laid so early. What were they?

Coming in to comment and ask my own question. I have a pair of khaki campbells who are 14-15 weeks old (3.5 months). Just today I noticed the female getting flirty with the male and doing the duck equivalent of squatting for him. He seemed to have no clue what was going on and proceeded to pluck a few feathers off her back.

These are my first ducks so I don’t really know what to expect from them but would it be right to assume any sort of breeding behavior initiated/reciprocated by the female means she is close to laying?
