Coop plans, first timer! :)

I live in Wisconsin, are you sure i sondo need insulation?
I live near the Michigan line, and our chooks do fine with no insulation in their coop. All we do is make sure there is plenty of straw for the nests, lots of pine shavings on the floor, and we put up plastic panels wherever there is hardware cloth in the run to break the wind and keep out the snow. We do have a heated waterer inside the coop, so that probably adds a wee bit of heat, but we have ventilation vents right above the waterer to make sure that there is no moisture buildup. The roosts are 2x4 flat side up so they can keep their toes covered with their feathers when they roost.

We are in the middle of building our coop. My husband wants to add insulation. He says it will keep it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. My 4 chickens currently reside in a prefab with no insulation. They made it through the winter, but the "cooler" in the summer intrigued me enough to say ok. Do you think it would be beneficial for the summer? Our coop will have no shade. Thanks.

yes... insulation will keep the coop cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Your husband is right. ;)

It will... but.....it can also be a heavenly place for pests to take up residence, and you have to cover it so the chickens won't eat it.
Good ventilation makes insulation pretty moot,
unless you are in a really cold place, like Alaska.
Insulating the roof may help in summer to deflect heat gain tho.

My husband was planning on sandwiching it between osb. We have no shade, so I thought the insulation might work out well to keep them cool?

It may very well slow the heat gain inside the coop from being in full sun,
tho heat is still going to infiltrate coop interior with the ventilation,
it may also take longer for coop to cool back down at night when temps drop.
Only time will tell, and you can always employ a fan to blow cool air into the coop in the evenings from the east or north side of the coop, that's what I do and it does help.
