Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Pics
I have a theory that the smaller the chicks, the less of a 'threat' they are to the adult flock...especially if they are introduced somewhat slowly.

I've noticed that will happen when I quote and reply on my iPhone. Assuming it's just some sort of glitch in the quote feature.

That explains it then...I replied using my iPhone...

Thank you.

I have a theory that the smaller the chicks, the less of a 'threat' they are to the adult flock...especially if they are introduced somewhat slowly.

That may be a viable theory. The smaller chick grabbed and ran and it was pretty obvious that the big girls weren't concerned by the action...so there may be something to that line of thought.

I try to understand these animals that I take care of each day. It's fun to predict the behavior and see that the prediction is correct and that the chicken behaves the way that I want them too. That is how I train them and use that training to take care of them. I call them and they come running...that has huge uses. I teach them to stay off the Trampoline and the Deck, it makes my wife happy and as such I get to keep chickens. Some times there are issues and failures, but generally there are insights followed by deeper understanding.

My experience has shown me that Chickens are Hardwired, they have an ingrained behavior. If you understand their motivations and their social structures, you can train them. I've been messing with this behavior in my birds for several years and I've written about some of my findings and observations. One of the primary behaviors is the Pecking Order within the flock. This behavior is so ingrained within chicken social structures, that if a Rooster is not present one of the hen's will step up and be the flock boss.

So when I saw a chick run up and take food from an adult bird, it set me back a bit. That action totally violates the pecking order within a flock. There should have been some sort of reprisal to re-establish the Pecking Order and that reprisal didn't happen. So yeah...I was shocked that there wasn't bloodshed.

I'll be watching these birds and taking notes on their social interactions.

Chickenology: Tiny Eggs

I addressed this in another thread and wanted to include the information here for future reference. The post has been edited to remove the O.P. on the subject.

Quote: Tiny or miniature eggs, that come from a non-bantam breed, are known as “Cock Egg’s”. They form when a piece of tissue enters the Oviduct and triggers the formation of an egg.

Quote: Why would you remove the OP of the quote?
It's always good to be able to go to an original post from a quote....great attribute of this forum.

Is it still edible? Interesting!
Usually....if there's a yolk. Open them up and decide.
Sometimes they are tiny undersized yolks in them...sometimes just piece of tissue.
There are many names for those eggs...wind eggs, fart eggs, fairy eggs.......

In my day job, dealing with students there is a lot of confidentiality...I'm just conditioned to remove personal information from things that I work on...I guess I don't really have a specific reason...just habit.

The reason that I post these details is that I do like to keep information that I've posted in one location where I can find it and reference it if needed down the road. It's also nice for others to have access to the information as well. So this is the thread that I post those items too.

Thank you both for posting your thoughts and responses, I enjoy the feedback.

Understanable, but here on a public forum it's the opposite, you want as much connectivity/credit as possible. Time for a new habit ;-)
