Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

My son was in the garden, picking squash for dinner.

He turned around when he heard my wife...and there was the hawk with the chicken, coming towards the garden at about 2 feet off the ground. So he jumped out of the garden and made a grab for the chicken as they went by....hawk and chicken hit the ground.

I made a grab for the hawk and missed as the hawk flew up into the tree by the garden.

Here's a view of that part of the yard from the deck, for reference.

I might have to re-type for clarification

First egg today. Woohoo! Pretty sure its from one of the 17 week old Amberlinks. She's been rehearsing the egg song for more than a week. This morning, while everyone else was in the run scratching around, she was in the coop pacing and futzing with #4 nest box. Went to check after picking up the youngun' from summer school and, voila! There it was...small but cute.

That is awesome news....very cool.

After all these years I still remember our first egg from our flock. It was a duck egg, I was 12...in my eyes that egg was ginormous huge. Traded a BB gun for the ducks, the white duck was named Henry, and the dark duck was named Max. That's when we found out that Max was actually Maxine.

My little flick of Welsummers aren't laying, but I hope it's soon.
