I'm about to convert a large doghouse into a chicken coop. If the coop opens into an enclosed run that is secure from predators with HC (top, bottom, sides and 24" apron), will it be necessary to put a door on the coop's opening?

My girls have been outside in a setup sort of like you describe for 17 months now with no real problems, but be aware that nothing is predator proof.

I close and lock the pop door every night. I feel it's better safe than sorry.

I have a secure setup like you, and I still close the door each night. I think it is more for my benefit than the chickens! I sleep better knowing I have done everything I can to keep them safe. It would take just one attack to make me regret not closing the door!
