My coop is 4'x8' and the run is 4' tall x 8' long and 7' wide. Will that hold my 6 chicks comfortably? Thanks

Hi Mike!

The short answer is that your run and coop will hold them, but you won't be able to know if it will hold them comfortably until they live in them for a while.

The standard equations are
Coop: 4 square feet per chicken
Run: 10 Square feet per chicken

Based on the standard equations above, using 6 chickens
Coop: You need 36 square feet for your coop, and you have 32.
Run: You need 60 square feet for your run, and you have 56.

The good new is, the standard equations are general guidelines. Your chickens' temperaments, breeds, and size will best determine if your space will be enough for them. The most common problem with overcrowding and boredom is bullying, feather-picking, and other such undesirable behavior. I'm sorry I can't give you more of a cut-and-dry answer. Let us know how it goes!

In my opinion I thing you will do fine. The DIRTY LITTLE SECRET is. will you be able to stay at that number ????? Or WILL CHICKEN MATH OVERCOME YOU ???
WISHING YOU BEST

Then just add and expand.

I'm hopeful I can stay that low. However, I already have my doubts.
LOL! We started at 15. Then we decided to limit at 20. We have 10 more chickens coming Tuesday, totaling 30. We have decided our critical chicken mass will be 30. I am praying for impulse control! [Wait, I hope I am not enabling you by posting this confession.
