Hey Chicken Lovers,

Expanding the coop for the new brood. Doubling the size of our previous flock, used to be six hens now have 12 on the way!

Old coop was 4 x 6 = 24 sq. ft.

New coop will be 7 x 6 = 42 sq. ft.

I built the original coop 6 years ago. I was proud of if then and it worked out well for 6 hens but I will make a few improvements based on lessons learned. So, enjoy some pics of the progress...

Roof complete and the coop is dried-in. Apologies that the run is overgrown. When the last of our hens passed we neglected the area. Miss those girls but really excited about the new brood!

Time to turn my attention to the siding. For grins I called a local lumber yard to price 1x6 rough sawn cedar. $30 bucks for a 16’ piece. No thanks. Instead I grabbed a load of cedar fence pickets at the local box store for $2/each. Quality is rough but picking through the pile reveals some decent boards. Consistent dimensions are a problem though, 1/8” variation in thickness is common. Fortunatley a trip through the my trusty old planer and everything gets down to 1/2”.

Used my edge jointer to cut a 1/4” deep by 1” wide rabbet on the back side and suddenly I’ve got lap siding.
