Coop resurrection-Update 6/9-Moved in and mostly DONE!

Umm..roof is already on

. I didn't cut any new holes, i just went with the existing one. I figured if one vent got the job done 90 years ago (coop was built in 1920), it would work now. How about some gable-end vents on the sides? I really don't plan on having many birds for how big that coop is. Four maybe up to 6.

This roof is actually facing the west, and there are windows in the front on the east side. Not super cold country. Northeastern Colorado Piedmont. That area that isn't quite the Great Plains, but isn't quite the Rocky Mountains either.

I'm originally from denver.
sorry about calling my idea "joists" instead of "studs" (braindead) at the top both front and rear. But gable end vents may be easier to deal with and potentially easier to cover in the occasional -20 and wind, i remember the wind off the Rockies. Burrrrr!!
A guy asked me if I'd ever been to Kansas, and I said "no". He said "if you ever want to see it, just put your chin down on your kitchen table, that's what it looks like."

Well the roof is on. I ended up not cutting out any holes on top for ventilation. Not yet anyway.

Would a few gable end vents along the back and sides be sufficient? The coop is really quite big, about 100 square feet. Keep in mind I am getting 6 birds max. Also, there are 4 large windows in the front of the coop that will be open a majority of the time. They will be closed most of the time during winter and then with storms. Open spring, summer, and fall.

Here is a picture of the roof. I am going to put some edge trim on. Those exposed ends are pretty sharp.

she's ready as is. this is the first I've seen of the front. If those sharp edges are below 6', then bend them over to a 45 if you have room. Or they are so close to the building no one will be able get to them anyway. Look for all the nome made feeders and waters here on BYC and ADD CHICKENS, and your done except for nest boxes and roosts.

then run water and power at your leisure Good job Great score, and GOOD LIVIN' TO YA!

Is that a hose I see hanging on the left end?

good stuff, keep it up. I like the auto feeder and auto water ideas here on byc someone mentioned. make it easy on yourself, looks like you are the type to do it right first time around.
looks good, keep the pics coming.

That is a hose huh?
and those are sprinkler heads huh?
House isn't too far away, can you bury power like UGF wire, or do you think you even need it. there's so much "solar" available, you may be able to do without it. How far is the nearest harbor Freight -- Ft. Collins?

Nope, not a hose. Jumper cables. lol. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about water/electric. There is a Harbor Freight in Greeley about 10-15 minutes from where I live. Do they have some good solar stuff?

So should I put on some gable end vents for winter time so I can close up the windows?

Take your time, we're a long ways from extreme temps. If you feel the temp dosen't come down (or up) at night, or the chics are showing signs of discomfort, then you'll have to make adjustments.
H/F has "some" solar but at least get on the mailing list. they are online too. Easy to browse, then you know what you need b4 going.

Well I got a lot of work done on the outside the past couple of days. Replaced a lot of rotted siding, and trim. The outside is just about done.

Old busted up sididng at the bottom.

Pulled all of the trim off, and tore off the bad siding.

All of the new siding and trim is on. I salvaged as much of the trim as I could. Once again, poor men have poor ways.

I started looking around the inside a little more. My windows are on tracks. They can be opened and closed.

They haven't been moved very much in the past few years so they don't want to travel very far right now. I'll have to loosen them up.

The next step, getting all of the junk out of there. Anybody see anything they want? lol

You may be able to use that dresser and it's drawers for nest boxes. Use a chair or two to keep them from perching on your feeder and waters.

Chair painted different colors look cool in a garden or on a porch with potted plants. Some of them look like they are pretty solid too!
